You have your own unique talents and contribution. If website building and search engine optimization is already part of your skill set and you have the time to direct away from your main business, fantastic. Then go for it.

If not, then consider these points:

Every time someone visits your site it reflects your company’s image. Your website is your virtual front door and it immediately determines your brand, your reputation and your level of professionalism. A website reflects it's owner, and with all the competition out there  it's important to create a sense of trust.  A great website isn't just about making more sales, it's become the way to strengthen and build your brand, to get connected and create lasting customer relationships and to move your business into the future. Your website is there to help you to build your customer base... simply and effectively, with a thought and a click.

A positive, up-to-date, first impression could make all the difference.  Customers use all their devices often and purposefully. The whole purpose of a website is in gaining new customers, it would be a shame to lose them to navigation frustration. According to a study done by Google,  nearly 2 in 3 users are unlikely to return to a mobile site where they had trouble" Therefore, know what features to implement into your website to give your customers an easy and effective online experience so they can immediately take action and keep coming back. Customers today have high expectations of the sites they visit. Your website needs to look professional, and convey the personality of your business, and very importantly - your website needs to function easily on mobile phones, tablets and desktop computers.

SEO Drives growth for business. If you are going to build your website, you need to understand SEO (Search Engine Optimization) so you can get search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo to bring your website up where it can be found when people are searching for what you have to offer. If you find that learning SEO is daunting (that’s understandable), then you’ll need to hire an SEO expert. If you look into this, you’ll find different levels and you'll find too that this can be an expensive endeavor. But when you hire a website builder, often basic SEO is an integral part of your website package.

In putting the numbers together, you have to think long term . Of course every small business owner wants to, actually needs to be as frugal as possible. But if you do some good research, you'll find that some professional services are actually not expensive. Smart business owners realize how much the success of your business in today's market is dependent upon their website. Your website is your number one marketing tool. This is your business, and you don't want to step over dollars to pick up pennies.

Can you have full control? Every small business has different needs, and it's important to find a website building company that gives you personal service, to work with you right where you're at, and can even customize your package to find what's most ideal for your business. Many business owners want to have full access to their website, where they can add and edit as the business grows. Others find they are too busy and need to delegate more. The goal of a website company is to develop your online presence, and with all the fast moving changes in the world, it's important to stay up to date, to keep evolving and to get the support you need all along the way.

We understand small business owners - since that's what we are too. Building websites for small businesses has become one of my greatest joys, in helping one person at a time in their efforts to reach their highest potential. I've found it has a profound ripple effect that is exciting to be a part of.  I'm here to say that if you're one of those business owners who has attempted to build your own site and have become discouraged -don't give up. There are website builders who really do care and want to help be a part of your success. And you may be very happy to find with some -  it's really not expensive.

It’s surprising that some businesses owners still don’t have a website.  They have their reasons, but most often I hear that owners think it’s too expensive.

In this economy, this concern is understandable, but the truth is that a website is imperative to doing business today, unless of course you plan on keeping things just as they are and your income just as it is.

But if one of the main reasons for running your business is to make more money, then here’s the rub - you can’t make more money without getting more business, and you absolutely won’t get any more business if people can’t find you.

Beside offering fantastic goods and services, which promotes your business through word of mouth. You could go door to door, or contact all the people you know through emails and send out newsletters and notices. You could go to networking groups and do trade shows and get your business cards and brochures out around town to let people know you’re open for business. These are all good ideas, but statistics show that you are lucky if you get business from 2% - 10% of the people you connect with this way. You have to ask yourself - is this enough?

Let’s look at how business is done today. The days of the phone book and newspaper listings and magazine ads are long gone, and the browser is increasingly losing it’s users too, when no website is found and the only thing on a business is yelp, facebook or etsy for example.

The way it works is simple. People are on the go, and searching for a business on their phones or tablets, and Google directs them to all the businesses that meet their search criteria.

In their search, the businesses they see and go to, are the ones Google shows them.  The old saying “out of sight out of mind” is so true, because in today’s world of fast moving technology -

if you don’t have a website, customers can’t find you since your business 'virtually' doesn’t exist.   If you don’t have a website, you will never get in front of many people . They don’t have a chance of finding you, then they quickly go to the business they can find – your competitor.

It's hard to grow a businesses without a website ,  since no one but the owner and staff,  current customers and friends really know that they are open for business. Some established local business owners may think - why get a website when everyone in town knows about them, and many probably do. But people are busy, and many people really don’t know a business is there even if they’ve driven by it many times.

Wise business owners who understand the trend   are at a huge advantage , and quickly move into the mobile market advance their business way ahead of their their competition. These local businesses now have a direct outlet to their customers, with the ability to reach them in real - time with mobile technology.

Most local searches start from a smart phone - for fast action. A mobile-friendly website produces and average of 75% higher rate of action. Click-to-call, maps and directions drive immediate in-store sales from customers ready to purchase. Users take action on a mobile-friendly site - driving more traffic to your door.

Every time someone visits your site it reflects your company’s image.  So it's important to stay current. Not only do you need a website that's formatted for desktop computers and tablets, today it's imperative to have a mobile version of your website too (a 2014 Google study found 87% of searches are done from a mobile phone- imagine what that % is now). Mobile customers use their devices often and purposefully. They have high expectations of the mobile sites they visit. A positive, up-to-date, professional first impression could make all the difference - in gaining new customers vs. losing business.

Of course a website can bring in more customers , but a great website can help you to keep them coming back and build lasting relationships by utilizing all the current technologies to reach them and stay connected.

You're business is unique to you, and there is no better way to evolve your business, build your brand and move your business into the future than with a great website. And a website doesn't have to be expensive, just effective.
